Train the Trainer Sessions
Formal Bird Dog Training
Our new format for onsite training is proving to be successful. Many people asked for training where they would not have to leave their family pet onsite with us for 3 months. We understand the hesitation of leaving your best bud in someone else's care because we feel the same way with our dogs.
To meet this need, we have Train the Trainer sessions, thereby eliminating the need to leave your dog for an extended period of time. Our new Ohio customers are happy with the format and pleased with the results. Three upsides to these sessions: You get to keep your dog at home, you have the added satisfaction of seeing results as your dog learns, and you develop a deeper bond with your buddy.
Here's how Train the Trainer sessions work: You and your dog spend an hour and a half with trainer, Gary, where he teaches you how he trains a bird dog. A session will cover basic bird dog obedience, tools and how to use them correctly, commands, etc. Information will vary, depending upon your dog's skill level. With your new knowledge, you go home and train your dog a few minutes every day. During this time, Gary is available by email or phone if you have questions. Another session can be scheduled when you feel you need it. We have two Train the Trainer sessions: Bird Dog Foundation and Advanced Training. Special skills classes are also available, if needed.

At Lockhard, we practice firm, non-harsh methods in non-stressful exercises, and proceed at the pace of your dog's maturity. We expose your dog to lots of birds to let their natural instinct build desire, and then channel that energy into their own controlled style.
The following training can be learned in your "Train the Trainer" sessions. Be sure to call or email us if you have any questions. Trainer, Gary, is always glad to answer questions.
Please note: Behavioral problems
in your dog must be worked out prior to any bird training.

PuppyGarden
Basic manners for the bird dog
Lots of birds,
lots of obedience. Builds desire and takes obedience to the highest level your puppy can tolerate without pressure. This is a fun, exciting experience for a pup. This first introduction will create interest and desire and prepare them for formal training.
For pre-PuppyGarden exercises, go to Puppy Training Tips.

Formal Training
Full bird dog training
Best started from 10 months to a year old. An older
dog can learn new tricks, though, so don’t hesitate. We'll teach all the skills needed to get the best performance from your dog while hunting in the field.
Obedience Training
Build a good foundation
Obedience training is a must for all dogs, whether or not they will be hunters. Your pup will learn to listen and obey commands. We train on the leash only, as we find it is most effective. All of the basics are covered: heel, sit, come, and down. Teaching you, the owner, how to handle your pup at home is important.

Trained Retrieve
This training encourages your dog to accept a bumper and bird in their mouth and to Fetch and Hold until the Release command is given. Your dog must be at the right maturity level for this exercise and will be assessed before being accepted into the program.

Field Training
Keep your dog on the right track
We like to follow up on our started dogs to make
sure they're on the right track. We met Lockhard's Jake at Clear
Creek Sports Club, where they are known for their fast-flying
pheasants. This training is done in the field for dogs who have
had previous training.

Lockhard's Jake showed 3 fine points and retrieves in his follow-up
session (13 photos).
